Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov proposed leaving the right to live in dormitories only poor students. The official said this at an extended meeting of the State Duma Committee on Higher Education, his words were quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Obviously, the issue needs to be resolved, and the hostel as an entity should be left only for low-income students or those who are in a difficult life situation,” Falkov believes.
According to the minister, prices for dormitories are “absolutely inadequate to the costs of their maintenance.” He added that the authorities should create “another status, different from the hostel, where there will be a different reasonable cost, and economic mechanisms will be included.”
According to official data, at the end of 2023, 860 thousand Russian students had the right to live in dormitories. At the same time, as sociologists note, every fifth student is dissatisfied with the quality of life in dormitories, and another third did not answer this question.
