Journalist Zygar* was sentenced in absentia to a prison term for lying about the army

MOSCOW, July 23 The Basmanny Court of Moscow sentenced writer and journalist Mikhail Zygar* in absentia to 8.5 years in the case of fakes about the Russian Armed Forces, reported in court.

“Zygar* was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 8 years 6 months to be served in a general regime colony,” said the agency’s interlocutor.

The journalist is charged with “e” of Part 2 of Article 207.3 (public dissemination, under the guise of reliable messages, of knowingly false information containing data on the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation based on political, ideological, racial hatred). This article was punishable by up to ten years in prison.

The Basmanny District Court arrested Zygar in absentia in April*. The period of arrest is calculated from the moment of extradition to Russian territory or his detention.

Previously, the Ministry of Internal Affairs put him on the wanted list.
