Pollack falling under European sanctions will force Russia to look for new markets – RASPP
The inclusion of Russian pollock under European sanctions will force the Russian Federation to look for new markets, writes the Telegram channel of the Russian-Asian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
This week it became known that the EU is currently discussing a tougher ban on seafood imports from Russia to the union countries – and this time it includes fresh fish, including the popular pollock. The figures have already been calculated – if Russian pollock falls under sanctions in Europe, the EU will lose 26.3% of imports (€ 266 million) of this product.
«Accordingly, Russian exporters will have to look for buyers for such a volume or reduce their catch, which they, of course, would not want. And it is unlikely that the domestic market will accommodate such a quantity of «free» pollock,» the article says.
If we take the export of all fresh and frozen fish from the Russian Federation to the EU, then last year it amounted to € 312.7 million.
«That is, if not only pollock falls under sanctions, then buyers will have to be found for a more impressive volume of fish products. By the way, the export of fresh and frozen fish from the Russian Federation to the EU is decreasing (by 16% last year), but something tells me that a radical closure of Europe for Russian fish will be a very unpleasant event,» the Russian Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs writes.
As noted, China is the first to come to mind.
«But in this case, the Chinese are more competitors than potential buyers. And they don't really need our pollock — the volumes that were supplied earlier were mainly processed into fillets and exported to other countries. So finding profitable options may take time and effort,» the article says. It is also noted that Europeans may not decide to leave themselves without a quarter of pollock imports.
