After YouTube slowdown, NUUM video uploads increase

MOSCOW, August 7 The amount of content uploaded to the NUUM video platform from MTS has grown 2.2 times compared to the monthly average amid a slowdown in YouTube in Russia; over the past two weeks, authors have uploaded more than 200 thousand videos, MTS said.
The head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein, stated at the end of July that slowing down YouTube in Russia was a necessary measure. He warned that YouTube download speeds on computers could drop by 70%, but mobile communications would not be affected for now. Roskomnadzor later commented that the grounds for taking action against YouTube were disrespect for Russia and its citizens, as well as numerous violations of the law.

«The number of uploaded videos has increased 2.2 times over the past two weeks compared to the monthly average, indicating high interest and engagement among platform users… Over the past two weeks, authors have uploaded more than 200,000 pieces of content,» MTS reported, commenting on NUUM's growth after YouTube slowed down.

The most popular categories for uploading videos over the past two weeks were «Games,» «Music,» «Humor,» «Animals,» and «Video Blogs.» These categories also became the most viewed on the platform, but «Humor» is the leader.
Earlier on Wednesday, VK reported that the number of installations of the VK Video app had grown to 250,000 per day amid a slowdown in the YouTube video hosting service, and the daily viewing time of video content on the platform by all users increased by a quarter in the first week of August compared to the average monthly figures for July.
Currently, in addition to the YouTube video hosting service, the Russian market includes the Russian VK Video, VK Clips and Rutube, the MTS video service for NUUM videos and streams, and Pikabu, one of the largest blog platforms on the RuNet, which is currently testing a separate short video feed. And in June, the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies (ROCIT) announced the launch of a domestic analogue of YouTube — the video hosting service «Platforma».
