BRUSSELS, August 12 The EU is aware of the fire at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) last weekend and is calling for the basic principles to be observed and for IAEA inspectors to be given full access to all areas of the facility, an EU representative said.
«The EU is aware of the explosions and fire at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) last weekend. The basic principles must be observed and IAEA inspectors at ZNPP must have full access to all areas of the facility,» the agency's source said.
At the same time, he once again repeated the traditional position of the European Union calling on Moscow to «unconditionally withdraw forces and equipment from the station and return control of the station to its rightful owner — Ukraine.»
On Sunday, the governor of the Zaporizhzhya region, Yevgeny Balitsky, reported that as a result of the shelling of Energodar by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a fire broke out at the cooling systems facility of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. In turn, the press service of the station reported that the fire broke out in the area of the Zaporizhzhya NPP cooling towers. The fire did not affect the operation of the station in any way; it was extinguished. All six units, as before, are not operating and are in a «cold shutdown» state. The Zaporizhzhya NPP is operating normally. There are no casualties. No violations of the limits and conditions for the safe operation of the NPP were recorded. The radiation background is normal.
