Massive family crossover Onvo L60 from Nio: interior revealed, production started

Chinese electric vehicle company Nio is preparing to launch the debut model of its subsidiary brand Onvo — a mid-size coupe-like crossover L60, which will compete with the Tesla Model Y.

Successful in terms of sales but constantly losing money, the Chinese company Nio launched a subsidiary brand Onvo this spring, which will offer more affordable electric cars than those that make up the Nio model range. The launch of the junior brand is Nio's response to the price war between electric car manufacturers, which was started last year by Tesla. Nio, being a premium brand, cannot reduce prices on its models indefinitely, which is why the more democratic brand Onvo was invented; it is aimed primarily at young families, while Nio is more about business and status. Nio has no plans to add plug-in hybrid models to its range, as many other Chinese electric car manufacturers have done.

The Onvo L60 is based on the NT3 modular platform with a 900-volt electric architecture and a simpler chassis than the Nio models: instead of double wishbones, there are McPherson struts at the front, a multi-link rear suspension, with conventional springs used as elastic elements, and air suspension for the Onvo L60 has not yet been announced. The overall length of the Onvo L60 is 4828 mm, width is 1930 mm, height is 1616 mm, and the wheelbase is 2950 mm.

In terms of dimensions, the Onvo L60 is close to the second-generation Nio EC6, but the Nio EC6 has a slightly shorter wheelbase (2915 mm) and a different, slightly more noble profile, that is, the Onvo L60 is not a redesigned and cheaper Nio EC6, they have different platforms and different bodies. The aerodynamic drag coefficient cd of the Onvo L60 is 0.229 (the Nio EC6 has 0.24). The side doors have frameless glass. The body is made of various grades of high-strength steel.

The Onvo L60's minimalism and layout largely replicate the Tesla Model Y's. There's only one central 17.2-inch multimedia screen in the front, and the projection screen on the windshield serves as the instrument panel. A separate 8-inch entertainment monitor is provided for the second-row passengers — it's mounted on the end of the cabinet between the front seats. The panoramic roof along the entire length of the cabin will allow you to enjoy the sun and sky while driving. The standard Onvo Sound audio system with a power of 1000 W has 18 speakers.

The technical characteristics of the Onvo L60 have not yet been officially announced, but in June this model surfaced in the electronic database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Trade, from where we learned that there will be rear-wheel drive single-engine versions with a capacity of 326 hp and all-wheel drive dual-engine versions, in which the front electric motor produces 136 hp, the rear — 326 hp, totaling 462 hp. Battery capacity is from 75 to 150 kW h depending on the modification, the power reserve on one charge is from 555 to 1000 km according to the CLTC cycle. The Onvo L60's discharged battery can be swapped for a charged one at Nio's rapidly growing network of terminals — in this case, the battery is not included in the price of the electric car, but is rented.

Onvo L60 will go on sale this fall, but orders are already being accepted at a preliminary price of 219,900 yuan (2.65 million rubles at the current exchange rate). For comparison, Nio EC6 currently costs from 358,000 yuan (4.32 million rubles) in China, Tesla Model Y — from 249,900 yuan (3.02 million rubles). Production of the Onvo L60 has already begun at Nio's second plant in Hefei, Anhui Province.

Next year, Nio is set to launch another subsidiary brand, currently codenamed Firefly (the commercial name will most likely be different), which will be positioned as a junior brand to Onvo and will focus primarily on the European market, which is in demand for compact and subcompact electric vehicles at relatively affordable prices.

In the first seven months of this year, Nio sold 107,924 electric vehicles in China, up 43.85% from January-July 2023.
