This is the burial place of military and political leaders of the Soviet state; in the 1920s and 1930s, foreign communists were also buried there, including John Reed, Sen Katayama, and Clara Zetkin. Joseph Stalin, Felix Dzerzhinsky, Mikhail Kalinin, Andrei Zhdanov, Kliment Voroshilov, Semyon Budyonny, Mikhail Suslov, Leonid Brezhnev are buried near the mausoleum. Monuments are erected over the graves — portraits by the sculptor Nikolai Tomsky.
