The remains are well-preserved.
As has been heard many times, mummies for scientists, it is a kind of historical treasure. This is not surprising, because thanks to these well-preserved remains of ancient people, you can learn a lot about the past.
A joint Italian-Egyptian expedition conducted excavations in the city of Aswan, Egypt. The settlement is located on the Nile River. On its western bank is the so-called Mausoleum of the Aga Khan. It was built on the site of an ancient necropolis that researchers were interested in.
An ancient tomb and 20 mummies
The discovered tomb was named AGH032 and is located on the territory of the former necropolis, which was used for burials from the 6th century BC to the 4th century AD. Simply put, he caught the time of both the domination of the Persians and Hellenes in Egypt, and the Romans.
Inside the family tomb, 20 mummies were found and, unfortunately, long before archaeologists, robbers visited the place of eternal rest of the dead. This is probably the reason why there are practically no valuables left inside. But archaeologists have found other interesting things: «dump» from bones (mainly mutton), ceramics, places of sacrifice and other interesting things.
Inside the tomb, of course, there were mummies. Among them there were several interesting ones:
- The mummy of an adult man with a copper necklace and a tablet with the written Greek name — Nikostratos. It should be noted that this mummy was separated from the others and was located near the eastern wall». Scientists have suggested that the remains of the body were removed by robbers.
- The mummy of a child was found in the terracotta sarcophagus in an ancient Egyptian funeral mask, which was made of linen and papyrus.
- Another mummy of the child was X-rayed and found she has a lump in her chest. Perhaps this may indicate illness.
Well, now, in addition to several dozen mummies found in this place earlier, about 20 more from the «new» tombs. Now, scientists will do some careful research to find out the dates of death and other details about how these people lived.
