Lawyer Alfonso Tatarano said that the court made a decision the day before, on January 20. “Late last night, we were able to briefly talk with him — he is in a cheerful mood, his state of health is normal, he asks me to thank everyone for their support,” Irina Lavrenchuk said on Facebook.
The arrest of Lavrenchuk became known on January 4, but the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko reported that the director was taken into custody on December 17 last year. On the 31st, the consul visited Lavrenchuk and assessed his condition as satisfactory, and the conditions of detention as acceptable.
According to the curator of the Free Eugene Lavrenchuk initiative group Marianna Gudich-Paly, Lavrenchuk is accused in the Russian Federation of major fraud (h 3, article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) in connection with “financial violations” eight years ago. She clarified that the director lived and worked in Russia until 2014. “Yevgeny’s family and close circle gave permission for the public disclosure of the details of the case, realizing that [it] was fabricated and looked like political persecution,” Gudich-Paliy wrote on Facebook.
