Gas prices to remain high — European Commission

Governments have been forced to step in to cushion the impact of unusually high prices.

The European Commission reported that gas prices will remain high in the near future. Geopolitical tensions increase the trend, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to Channel 24.

European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson discussed this issue during an informal meeting of energy ministers of EU member states. Global gas prices have reached historic highs in recent months.

In the short term, we will face unusually high energy prices, a trend exacerbated by geopolitical tensions,
Simson said.

< p>The politician stressed that consumers and businesses in the EU are working hard to pay their bills. Governments have been forced to intervene to cushion the impact of unusually high prices. In particular, we are talking about the adjustment of taxes and duties.

Actions have significantly mitigated the impact of high prices. However, this is not enough to resolve the situation.

«Gas stock levels in the EU are significantly lower than usual at this time of year. Many ministers noted that the situation beyond the eastern border of the EU creates uncertainty in the markets,” Simson said.

Gas transit through Ukraine is minimal

  • The head of the Ukrainian GTS, Serhiy Makogon, said on January 18 that the volume of Russian gas transit through Ukraine amounted to 52.4 million cubic meters since the beginning of the year.
  • This indicator is the lowest in the last 4 years. According to Makogon, this indicates that «Gazprom» not interested in helping the EU countries in a crisis period. Official Moscow puts pressure on Europe to launch the odious «Nord Stream-2».
