Archive photoYEREVAN, Jan. 23 Chairman of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Armenia Alen Simonyan will act as President of the country until new early elections of the Armenian leader, follows from the corresponding provision of the constitution. On Sunday, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian announced his resignation . As the main reason, he pointed out the lack of proper powers that do not allow the head of state to influence the fundamental processes of foreign and domestic policy. According to the constitution, in cases of removal from office, impossibility of exercising powers, resignation or death of the president of the republic before the newly elected president takes office, his powers are exercised by Chairman of the National Assembly. Extraordinary elections of the President of the Republic are held no earlier than 25 and no later than 35 days after the opening of the vacancy. The President of the Republic is elected by Parliament for seven years. The same person can be elected president only once. At least one quarter of the total number of deputies has the right to nominate a candidate. According to the constitution, the President submits his resignation to the National Assembly (Parliament). The resignation is considered accepted from the moment of its promulgation in the manner prescribed by law.
