MOSCOW, Jan 29 The reigning world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen won the chess tournament ahead of schedule in Wijk aan Zee (Netherlands).
In the penultimate round, Carlsen outplayed Fabiano Caruana from the USA with black pieces. This allowed him to win the tournament ahead of schedule, since in the last round he will automatically receive one point for a technical victory over Russian Daniil Dubov, who dropped out due to coronavirus infection. For the Norwegian, the victory at the tournament in Wijk aan Zee was the eighth in his career.
Russian chess player Sergey Karjakin in the 12th round lost with black to the American Sam Shankland, capitulating on the 26th move. Another representative of Russia, Andrey Esipenko, playing with white pieces, on the 36th move made a draw with the Hungarian Richard Rapport.
14 grandmasters take part in the tournament, playing in a one-round format. The games of the last, 13th round will take place on Sunday.
