The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) was created by Wilhite in 1987 while at Compuserve. Over the years, this image format has become one of the main methods of conveying emotions on social networks. In 2013, Wheelhite received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 17th annual Webby Awards for his invention and contribution to Internet culture.
