Japan's Sakamoto wins gold at World Figure Skating Championships

MOSCOW, Mar 26 Japanese figure skater Kaori Sakamoto won the singles tournament at the World Championships in figure skating in Montpellier (France). The Japanese woman was in the lead after the short program and won the free program, gaining a total of 236.09 points. For Japanese figure skaters, this success was the first since 2014. Second place was taken by Belgian Luna Hendrix (217.70), who brought her country the first ever world championship award in women's single skating. Third place went to American Alice Liu (211.19). Against the backdrop of events in Ukraine, the International Skating Union (ISU) suspended athletes from Russia and Belarus from competitions under its auspices, including from the World Figure Skating Championships. Russian figure skaters five times at the previous six world championships climbed to the highest step of the podium. In 2021, the winner of the World Championship in women's single skating was Russian Anna Shcherbakova, who won the gold medal of the Olympic Games in Beijing in February. Sakamoto took third place at the Games. Russian skaters perform at the Channel One Cup, which will end on March 27 in Saransk.
