WASHINGTON, Apr 25 Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov congratulated American veterans of World War II on the anniversary of their meeting at Elbe and urged to turn to the experience of those who in those years rose above disagreements in order to solve joint problems. Soviet and American troops, completing the defeat of Nazi Germany, met on the banks of the Elbe River on April 25, 1945. This event is considered the highest point in the allied relations of the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition.
"The meeting on the Elbe is a vivid symbol of the combat brotherhood of the USSR and the USA, who fought shoulder to shoulder against a common enemy. The memory of this event is alive to this day. In the context of the deepest crisis in Russian-American relations, we can and must turn to the experience of those who had the wisdom and courage to rise above differences in order to solve common problems. Many problems have accumulated in the modern world that can hardly be resolved without the cooperation of Moscow and Washington", – said the ambassador.
