File photo ATHENA, May 12 The Greek Parliament on Thursday voted for amendments to the Agreement on Mutual Defense Cooperation between Greece and the United States, which transfer to the Americans almost indefinite use of military bases on Greek territory. «For» voted 181 deputy in the 300-seat parliament. «Against» was 119 votes. Greece becomes the main partner of the US in the region, Athens saidThe agreement was supported by the ruling New Democracy party and the PASOK-Movement for Change party .The largest opposition party in the country, the Radical Left Coalition SYRIZA — Progressive Alliance, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the right-wing Hellenic Fox Party and the left-wing MERA25 party opposed. The agreement on mutual defense cooperation between Greece and the United States (Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement, MDCA) was signed on October 14, 2021, it provides for the transfer of four military bases to the United States in addition to the previously provided four bases, including the Yannuli military camp near the port of Alexandroupolis in the north of the country, the naval base in Crete, the Litohoro shooting range in the region of Pieria and the Georgula camp near the airbase in Larisa. The agreement is valid for five years instead of one year now , however, the opposition notes that the agreement becomes indefinite after five years.
