File photoMOSCOW, May 14.Ronald Reagan's National Security Adviser Robert MacFarlane has died at the age of 84, the Washington Post reported, citing his son. death was an exacerbation of lung disease. McFarlane was Reagan's national security adviser for two years (1983 — 1985). He left this post due to disagreements with US Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Reagan Chief of Staff Donald Regan. Subsequently, McFarlane was involved in the major Iran-Contra political scandal, which flared up in the second half of the 1980s and was associated with secret arms supplies to Iran. In 1988, as part of the investigation into this case, he pleaded guilty to withholding information from Congress. McFarlane was sentenced to two years' probation and a $20,000 fine, but was pardoned by President George W. Bush in 1992.
