The State Duma accused the Ukrainian gymnasts of the removal of the Russian Kulyak

MOSCOW, May 18 Suspension of gymnast Ivan Kulyak was the result of “unsporting behavior” of Ukrainian athletes, whose goal is not their own awards, but the exclusion of rivals from Russia from competitions, said Sergey Burlakov, deputy head of the State Duma Sports Committee. In early March, Kulyak took third place in exercises on parallel bars at the World Cup in Doha. The Russian came to the award ceremony with the letter Z applied to the uniform, which has become an unofficial symbol of support for the Russian special operation in Ukraine. The athlete himself later explained that this was a response to provocations by Ukrainian gymnasts. After that, a disciplinary case was opened against Kulyak. On Wednesday, the disciplinary committee of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) disqualified the athlete for one year. “The case with Kulyak clearly demonstrates how boorish Ukrainian athletes began to behave in international competitions. It seems that the main goal of Ukrainian athletes is not to win prizes, but to do everything to prevent Russian athletes from competing,” Burlakov said. He noted that he supports Kulyak, because in “such an unhealthy atmosphere, the feeling of patriotism goes off scale and you want to show the whole world that you love your country and are proud of it.” “Such unsportsmanlike behavior (of rivals from Ukraine in relation to the Russian gymnast – ed.) only says that the Ukrainian team is very weak in terms of discipline. Apparently, their coaches and mentors forgot that discipline and compliance with sports postulates is the key to a successful sports career “, – the deputy concluded.
