Pyongyang's reciprocal steps were constantly ignored, the UN Security Council did not properly respond to them, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said at a UN Security Council meeting. According to him, the sanctions paradigm could not guarantee security in the region or resolve issues of missile and nuclear non-proliferation. As Nebenzya pointed out, security problems in the region cannot be solved by primitive and straightforward methods with serious side effects for the population.
"In the last year, we have only seen the situation on the Korean Peninsula worsen. Our Western colleagues are accustomed to shifting all the blame on the North Korean authorities. However, it completely ignores the fact that Pyongyang's repeated calls to the United States to stop hostile activities, which would open up opportunities for dialogue, were never taken seriously,» he stressed.
«We only heard from our American colleagues about the need for new sanctions. The reciprocal steps and positive signals taken by Pyongyang in 2018, 2019 were constantly called into question. The Council could not find the strength to respond to them appropriately,» Nebenzya concluded.
