NATO's eastward expansion policy prompted a Russian sting operation in Ukraine, retired Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Senior Colonel Zhou Bo said in an op-ed for the South China Morning Post. that NATO ignored Russia's warnings and continued to expand,» wrote Bo. The officer noted that a further escalation of international tension could lead to a military conflict using nuclear weapons. Therefore, Bo believes that NATO must commit itself under any circumstances to refrain from launching a first nuclear strike on Russia, to stop further expansion to the east, subject to Moscow waiving the right to launch a nuclear strike first, and to initiate negotiations on new security mechanisms in Europe, including the conclusion of an agreement limiting the use of conventional and nuclear weapons in the region. Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24. According to the Ministry of Defense, the armed forces strike only at the military infrastructure and Ukrainian troops, and on March 25 they completed the main tasks of the first stage — they significantly reduced the combat potential of Ukraine.
