Few protests were reported in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, in mid-April after police released a video in which an officer, unable to apprehend a stopped black driver, shot him in the head. The incident happened on April 4th. As follows from the published footage, the police officer stopped the car to check the documents for the vehicle, explaining that the numbers did not match the technical data of the car. The driver had already got out of the car by that time, although the officer did not demand it. The law enforcement officer asked for an ID, the black man answered indistinctly, the policeman clarified whether he spoke English and received an affirmative answer, the driver opened the door, but did not reach for the rights, but looked around parties. The policeman decided to detain the man, there was an attempt to escape, and then a struggle ensued between the inferior policeman and the stocky delinquent who managed to stay on his feet. When the officer tried to use a shocker and thereby knocked the detainee down, he took the device away. The policeman, having fallen from above, made a series of unsuccessful attempts to immobilize the detainee, and then pulled out a pistol from his belt and shot the man in the head. The victim of the incident was 26-year-old native of the Congo Patrick Lioya. Following the release of the video, several hundred people gathered outside the city's police department demanding «stop this.» By the evening of the next day, the number of protesters was no more than twenty people.
