The IOC responded to criticism of the admission of transgender people to competitions

MOSCOW, June 24, Taras Barabash. Communications Director of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC) Mark Adams said that the organization allowed the federations to independently choose the rules regarding the admission of transgender people to competitions and is ready for criticism on this issue. Earlier, the former first racket of the world, American tennis player Martina Navratilova, called the participation of transgender people in women's sports unfair and accused the IOC of lack of initiative on this issue «This is a very complex topic, a complex situation. We have to find a balance. We believe that each specific sport, each discipline knows better if there is a significant advantage for a transgender person. Therefore, we have left the international federations to decide for themselves. There cannot be a single rule, which suits everyone. We accept that we will be criticized, this is inevitable, but we must find a balance,» Adams said at a press conference the IOC Executive Committee in Lausanne. In 2021, a transgender athlete took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo for the first time. In the women's part of the weightlifting competition in the weight category up to 87 kg, New Zealander Laurel Hubbard took the last place, having failed to complete a single attempt.
