"Russian Federation in the interests of conducting an objective investigation of the attack on the pre-trial detention center in Yelenovka, which led to the death of a large number of Ukrainian prisoners of war, officially invited experts from the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross", the department stressed.
Ukrainian troops struck on the night of July 29 according to the pre-trial detention center, which held prisoners of war, primarily militants of the nationalist regiment «Azov». The building was almost completely destroyed by fire. Fragments of an American MLRS HIMARS shell were found on the spot. The Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case. The Ministry of Defense called the shelling a blatant provocation, committed to intimidate Ukrainian servicemen and prevent their surrender. The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, for his part, attributed the attack to the fact that the prisoners began to testify. The wounded were sent to the hospital, some of the prisoners of war have since been in the colony in Yelenovka.
