MOSCOW, Sep 2 Two-time world title contender American boxer dies heavyweight Ernie Shavers, considered one of the best punchers in boxing history, reports Boxing Scene. Shavers passed away on Thursday — the day after he turned 78. The American made his debut in the professional ring in 1969. He twice challenged the world heavyweight title: in 1977, Shavers lost to Muhammad Ali, and in 1979 he was defeated by Larry Holmes. Both boxers admired Shavers' punching power. Former world champion George Foreman once said during an interview: “I never fought Ernie Shavers. And thank God!” Shavers spent his last fight in 1995, losing to Brian Yates. During his professional career, the boxer won 74 victories (68 by knockout) with 14 defeats, one fight ended in a draw.
