MOSCOW, 5 Sep. Lise Truss has been elected head of the British Conservatives and will take over as prime minister, said Graham Brady, head of the ruling Conservative Party's steering committee. The speech was broadcast by the Sky News channel.
Trasse received 81.3 thousand votes from her fellow party members. Her competitor, ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, received 60.4 thousand. In her first speech in her new status, the politician promised to fight rising electricity prices and reduce taxes. Formally, acting Prime Minister Boris Johnson will transfer powers no earlier than September 6. On the same day, the Queen of Great Britain will receive both at the Scottish castle of Balmoral, and the next Truss will answer questions from other parliamentarians.
Johnson, who replaced Theresa May as prime minister in 2019, announced on July 7 that he was leaving the post minister and head of the Conservative Party of Great Britain. 11 people applied for the vacant position of party leader. All members of the party, about 200,000 people, took part in the voting by mail. It ended on September 2nd.
