The court sentenced the Crimean Tatar to 11 years in prison for «ideological propaganda in a whisper» at the workplace

The Southern District Military Court sentenced Crimean Tatar Yashar Shikhametov to 11 years in a strict regime colony in a terrorism case (Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code). It is reported by «Crimean solidarity».

The prosecutor asked Shikhametov to be given the same term, noting that it was “less than it should be” due to a mitigating circumstance — the presence of a dependent minor child on the defendant.

The defense noted that Shikhametov has serious health problems — complications on his back, stomach and liver against the background of chronic hypertension.

“I’m already half-dead, I want to at least a little, while I can, raise children. I'm having trouble walking. I'm being held hostage, like a terrorist, but I'm not a terrorist. The best remedy for diseases will be to cancel this entire criminal case, ”Shikhametov said at the trial.

Yashar Shikhametov was detained and arrested after mass searches in Sevastopol in February 2021. According to the security forces, he, while working in a cafe as a cook, “led ideological propaganda in a whisper”, thus finding supporters of the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir.

In July 2022, the court sentenced Azamat Eyupov, who was detained at the same time as Shikhametov, to 17 years of strict regime in the case of and preparing for a violent takeover. Three more people arrested in February 2021 received terms of up to 19 years.
