MOSCOW, Sep 12 German tennis player Alexander Zverev announced that he would not play at the Davis Cup due to a new injury, which may take months to heal, the words of the athlete are cited on his Twitter by journalist Yannick Schneider. Zverev said that he had swelling of the bones. The tennis player noted that he would need weeks or months, not days, to recover. Previously, 25-year-old Zverev withdrew from the US Open due to an injury he received in early June in the Roland Garros semifinal match against Spaniard Rafael Nadal. He could not finish the meeting and left the court in a wheelchair. A few days later, the German underwent surgery due to a rupture of three lateral ligaments of the right ankle joint. On August 7, the tennis player started training on the court. The German national team will play the group stage of the Davis Cup in Hamburg from September 14 to 18. Zverev said that he would stay in the city and support the team, with Yannick Hanfman replacing him. The Russian national team, which won the tournament last year, was suspended from participation — it was replaced by the Serbian team.
