Go to media bankMOSCOW, Sep 18The current president of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeyev may withdraw his candidacy from the election of the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a source familiar with the situation told RIA Novosti. «There is information that Alexander Sergeyev intends to withdraw his candidacy from the election of the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He probably , will officially announce on Monday at the general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences, before the discussion of candidates for the post of president of the Academy of Sciences,» the source said. Earlier, the Russian government approved three candidates for the post of head of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Sergeev, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov and Director of the Institute of Thermal Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Markovich. According to the regulations on Monday, candidates must speak at the general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and they will be discussed. The elections themselves will be held on Tuesday by secret ballot. To win, one of the candidates needs to win a simple majority of votes — more than 50% of the total number of RAS members present at the general meeting. The RAS is not a state academy of sciences, but has the status of a federal state budgetary institution and does not directly conduct research. Research institutes that were part of the RAS before the reform of the system of state academies of sciences are now under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and the abbreviation RAS in their name is left as a brand. The functions of the RAS include scientific and methodological management of organizations in which scientific research financed from the state budget is carried out, participation in the preparation and coordination of programs or subprograms of fundamental scientific research, expert scientific support for the activities of state bodies and organizations, forecasting the main directions of scientific, technological and socio-economic development of the Russian Federation, popularization of science and technology. Alexander Sergeev was elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences in September 2017.
