Go to the media bankMOSCOW, Sep 19 The current president of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev refused to participate in elections of the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he leaves this post after one five-year term. «The events of recent days force me to withdraw my candidacy. This is a forced decision,» the scientist said at the general meeting of the Academy. According to him, he made this decision «in difficult conditions,» related to the pressure on many academics during the current election campaign. From whom and in what form this pressure came, Sergeev did not specify. The audience thanked the leader with standing applause for his work as head of the Russian Academy of Sciences for five years. Thus, there are two contenders for the post: Academician-Secretary of the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov and Director of the Institute of Thermal Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Markovich. The secret ballot will take place on Tuesday.
