In 2019, Aranovsky issued a dissenting opinion on the case of restricting the participation of foreigners in the Russian media. According to the judge, «even in favor of high citizenship and culture» one cannot restrict freedom of speech.

A year later, he proposed not to call Russia the legal successor of the USSR. He expressed his opinion in the decision on the case of compensation for housing, which was taken away during the Soviet repressions. As Aranovsky wrote, Russia “does not continue with itself in law, but replaces on its territory a state once illegally created,” which obliges the country to “reckon with the consequences” of the activities of the USSR authorities, “including political repressions.”

After that, the judges of the Constitutional Court were forbidden to express dissenting opinions, which were published in the «Bulletin of the Constitutional Court» along with the decision itself. Mediazona discussed this form of censorship with lawyers and a retired Constitutional Court judge.
