According to the Seoul Fire Department, a stampede began to form around 22.22 Saturday (16.22 Moscow time) in the Seoul district of Itaewon. The site of the incident was an alley that connects the central street of the district with the road where multiple popular restaurants are located. It differs in that the road goes down there, narrowing, and the surface is uneven. Therefore, people in a crush could easily stumble and fall under pressure from behind. Also, according to eyewitnesses, garbage was lying on the road and «something slippery» was spilled.
The Russian Embassy in Seoul said they were monitoring the incident, but did not yet have information about the citizenship of the victims and the dead. The Russians did not apply to the embassy in connection with the incident.
