MOSCOW, 11 Nov. UK food banks are running out of supplies as 320,000 people have turned to them for help in the past six months alone, writes the British newspaper The Independent.
“According to the Trussell Trust (non-governmental charitable organization. – Ed.), the need for the first time exceeded the volume of donations. At the same time, now one in five people who applied to the funds are from working families, and the number of emergency aid packages issued more than ever before,” the post reads.
The article notes that over the past six months the number of new applications has increased by 40 percent compared to the same period last year.
Journalists have called on the British government to extend free school meals to all children living below the poverty line as parents increasingly turn to food banks for help during the holidays.
After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the West stepped up sanctions pressure on Moscow. The disruption of supply chains has driven up fuel and food prices in Europe and the US. In the UK, the rising cost of living has hit millions of households.
