The Second Western Military District Court in Moscow has sentenced Gazi Isaev, former head of the Kizlyar District Department of Internal Affairs of Dagestan, to life imprisonment in the case of the 2010 Moscow metro attacks. This was reported by the correspondent of RIA Novosti from the courtroom.
Isaev was also stripped of the rank of colonel and ordered to pay 17 million rubles in favor of the capital's metro. The claims of relatives of the victims and those who died as a result of the attacks were rejected by the court. According to RIA Novosti, they asked to recover from the former policeman from 400 thousand to 600 million rubles.
The defense insisted on Isaev's innocence. In his final statement, he pointed out that the accusation «is based on the testimony of people whom he imprisoned [while working in the police]». Earlier, Isaev claimed that the case against him was fabricated due to the fact that he “wanted to imprison the head of the Kizlyar district.”
Isaev was found guilty of participating in a criminal community (part 3 of article 210 of the Criminal Code), banditry (part 3 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code) and a terrorist attack (point «b» of part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code).
According to investigators, police colonel Isaev was a member of the terrorist organization «Emirat Kavkaz» and in 2009-2010 warned militants about the actions of the security forces. In addition, according to the Investigative Committee, he himself took one of the suicide bombers with a “shahid belt” to the bus station in Kizlyar, from where the woman went to Moscow to commit a terrorist attack. According to Meduza, Isaev's lawyers brought a certificate to the court stating that on the day the suicide bomber left for Moscow, a policeman was in the hospital and could not accompany her.
Isaev was detained in November 2020, 10 years later years after the terrorist attacks on the Moscow metro stations Lubyanka and Park Kultury. As a result of self-explosion of two female suicide bombers on March 29, 2010, 39 people were killed, 128 were injured. Since at least 2014, the policeman has regularly participated in meetings of the anti-terrorist commission of the Kizlyar region.
