MOSCOW, 1 Mar. Another moai statue was found on Easter Island in Polynesia, writes ABC News. The sculpture was at the bottom of a dried-up lake.
In total, there are about a thousand moai statues on the island, they are made of porous rock — volcanic tuff. The tallest reaches 33 feet (approximately 10 meters). The average weight of the sculptures is three to five tons. But there are specimens up to 80 tons.
The recently discovered sculpture is smaller. But the find remains an important archaeological discovery. After all, it indicates that there may be other moai here, the existence of which scientists did not know. In addition, this is the first time that a stone statue on the island was found on the site of a dried-up lake.

«Moai reflect the history of the Rapa Nui people. They were the deified ancestors of the islanders,” says archaeologist Terry Hunt.
Researchers will continue to look for other moai, as well as the tools with which the sculptures were created.
