SIMFEROPOL, March 18 Chairman of the Coordinating Council of the International Association of Friends of Crimea, former Slovak Prime Minister Jan Czarnogursky said that Western sanctions could not contain development of the Crimea.
«Sanctions make life difficult for Crimeans, but they failed to contain and did not stop the development of the peninsula. Since the return of Crimea to Russia, that is, since the introduction of Western sanctions, its development has accelerated,» Charnogursky said.
According to him, over the years the Tavrida highway, a new airport in Simferopol, the Crimean bridge have been built, urban development continues, and social benefits have risen to the Russian level .
“The West uses sanctions for its geopolitical purposes with Crimea, regardless of the interests of ordinary Crimeans,” Charnogursky stressed.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support Kyiv on this issue. For its part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is «finally closed».
