TEL AVIV, Mar 27 Prime Minister of Israel may announce a suspension of government-promoted judicial reform amid mass protests across the country, Israeli media reported, citing unnamed government sources.
According to the Ynet portal, during these hours the prime minister is holding consultations with coalition partners in his office in Jerusalem. It is reported that the majority of members of the ruling coalition support the suspension of the legislative process to introduce judicial reform.
Nevertheless, the Minister of Justice and the main ideologist of the judicial reform, Yariv Levin, allegedly threatened to resign if the decision to freeze the reform is made.
On Sunday, according to media reports, thousands of Israelis broke through a police checkpoint near the residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem after he fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. A day earlier, Gallant, in a televised address to the nation, called for a suspension of judicial reform due to security concerns.
Protests continue in major cities of Israel on Monday night. In Tel Aviv, protesters rioted and blocked the main streets. The mass procession was accompanied by the burning of bonfires. In Jerusalem, near the residence of the prime minister, the police used water cannons against the protesters.
