TEL AVIV, Mar 27 Israeli Knesset Constitution Committee , Legislation and Justice has postponed until the morning voting for approval in the second and third readings of the bill on changing the composition of the commission for the selection of judges, the Arutz Sheva portal reports, citing a statement by the co-author of the reform.
«The Committee will meet on Monday at 8:00 am to vote on the text of the final law that changes the composition of the Selection Committee of Judges,» Simcha Rothman, head of the constitutional committee, was quoted as saying by the publication.
The discussion of the law, which will give the government an automatic majority in the commission for the selection of judges, was scheduled for late Sunday evening before being sent to the final readings in the Knesset. The law was approved by the plenum of parliament in the first reading on February 21.
Meanwhile, the Israeli channel Keshet 12 reports that more than 600,000 Israelis are participating in demonstrations across the country. The protest began on Sunday evening after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who the day before called for a suspension of judicial reform due to security concerns.
Mass protests against the reform of the Israeli legal system continue for the 12th week. The proposed package of laws is intended to significantly reduce the powers of the supreme court and give the government control over the appointment of judges.
