WASHINGTON, Mar 27 US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to ban government use of commercial spyware that could pose a threat to national security, the White House said.
The ban, introduced for the first time, concerns computer programs that provide the ability to remotely access electronic media in order to obtain information from them or manipulate them without the permission of the owner.
«The use of commercial spyware poses a tangible and growing threat to counterintelligence and risks to the United States, including endangering the safety of government employees and their families,» the administration said in connection with the signing of the executive order.
«Companies and programs from untrusted commercial vendors may pose significant risks to the security and integrity of U.S. government data and information systems,» the administration said. Such software, the White House adds, is actively used by foreign countries to violate human rights, restrict freedoms, spy on dissidents and human rights activists, and spy on citizens without proper legal justification.
The decree was signed on the eve of the forthcoming second «summit for democracy» this week and, as announced in the White House, this initiative will be actively discussed by its participants.
«The decree will also serve as a basis for deepening international cooperation in promoting the responsible use of tracking technologies, counteracting the use of such technologies and is designed to stimulate the reform of this industry,» the White House said.
