MOSCOW, April 4 SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg named the death of the father of the striker of the Russian national team and Sochi Matvey Michkov is a huge loss for Russian hockey.
On Tuesday Sochi reported that Andrey Michkov, 51, had been found dead. Matvey Michkov's father previously worked in the SKA system as a consultant coach.
““Terrible news. Andrei Michkov, the father of striker Matvey Michkov, died. We all knew Andrei Vladislavovich well, he was a wonderful person, an excellent father, raised Matvey and gave him a start in life. Andrei’s death is a huge loss for our hockey. I express my deepest condolences to Matvey and his family. We will not stand aside and will always help in every possible way. Strength and courage to the family and friends of Andrey Michkov,» Rotenberg wrote in his Telegram channel.
According to a source, Michkov Sr., together with his son and wife, was at home on the evening of April 2. After the second overtime of the Gagarin Cup Western Conference final match SKA — CSKA Andrey Michkov left the house. The man was sober, he left documents and car keys at home. 20 minutes after leaving home, Michkov Sr. stopped communicating, his phone was out of range. Volunteers of the Lisa Alert rescue squad were connected to his search.
Matvey Michkov is 18 years old, he moved to Sochi from SKA on loan during this season and played 27 games in the KHL for the Leopards, in which he scored 20 points (9 goals + 11 gears). The forward is one of the top picks for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
