MOSCOW, April 24 How to understand that neighbors are connecting to your Wi-Fi router, and how to prevent this, telecommunications expert Vyacheslav Burkhaylo told Sputnik radio in an interview.
An unexpected drop in the speed of devices connected to the router may indicate that consumers of Internet traffic unknown to you have appeared on your home Wi-Fi network, he noted.
“If you used to watch movies in HD quality on a TV connected to a router and there were no problems, and then suddenly the picture started to slow down or the movies began to load poorly, download and open more slowly, perhaps someone connected to your router other devices that you don’t know about. After all, the more devices online, the lower the Internet speed on each of them,” Burhailo explained.
Neighbors living behind the wall, for example, can steal traffic, he believes. If there is a suspicion that outsiders are using your Wi-Fi router, you need to look into the web interface of the device, the expert continued.
«To do this, you need to go to the browser on the IP address of the device, which can be found on the factory sticker on the bottom of the device, the username and password for logging in are also indicated there. Next, in the «connected devices» or «Wi-Fi clients» section, you need to check the number of devices that use your internet connection,» Burhailo said.
According to him, a modern router may also have an application for a smartphone that displays the types of devices connected to it.
Prevent traffic can be stolen by changing the password, Burhailo is sure. Most Russians use overly simple combinations of letters and numbers to secure their Wi-Fi routers, he suggests.
«You need to change the password through the application (if any — ed.) or the web interface of the router. This will cut off access to thieves. 80% of passwords for accessing Wi-Fi are too simple, people don't want to bother.
