According to the prosecution, in March 2022, a native of Ukrainian Irpin, Vedel spoke on the phone three times with friends and fellow policemen about the war: about underestimating the official death toll, about evacuating the wounded to Belarus, and about killing civilians. Wedel also argued that Ukraine «is not ruled by the Nazis.»
“He said that the Russian Federation is a murderous country, that Vedel would take the Kremlin, that he would no longer need a Russian passport … He described the events in Crimea as a genocide, namely a bloodless referendum,” a representative of the prosecutor’s office said in court.
The investigation believes that Vedel began to spread «fakes» under the influence of «the head of the homicide department of the city of Kiev Cheban D. M.» As the defendant himself said, they really called each other: Cheban is an acquaintance of his father.

Vedel's lawyer Daniil Berman noted in the debate that investigators are trying to present his client's private conversations that were wiretapped as «spreading fakes».< /p>
The wiretapping of telephone calls of an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was carried out in connection with the investigation of a criminal case on the murder of three policemen during the escape of a person under investigation 20 years ago. As follows from the declassified materials, the security forces believed that Vedel might have information about this crime.
Vedel was arrested on March 18, 2022. His wife Tatyana said that she could not meet her husband and hand over things to him in the pre-trial detention center.
In August, the case of an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was taken to court for the first time, but then the materials were returned to the prosecutor's office.
Judge Maria Smirnova explained this by the fact that the investigation did not establish the exact crime scene, indicating only the “base station coverage area” of the Megafon operator.
