Russian tennis received a 15-year-old star. Is this the new Sharapova?

Young Russian Mirra Andreeva lights up at a tournament in Madrid, where she already managed to win two victories and made her way to the third round. First, the finalist of the US Open-2021 Leila Fernandez fell, and later — the 14th racket of the world, Beatriz Haddad Maia. Russian tennis has been replenished with a new star for years to come.
History of TakeoffExperts noted Mirra's talent during the last season, when the athlete from Krasnoyarsk reached the quarterfinals of the junior Roland Garros and the US Open. Andreeva also looked great in her debut at the senior level, winning several ITF tournaments. The first such title happened in April last year in Turkey. Then the Russian woman was still 14 years old.

In October, Mirra got the opportunity to play at the WTA tournament in Tunisia and almost defeated compatriot Anastasia Potapova, losing in three sets. However, even the fact that the very young Andreeva fought on equal terms with an experienced rival already said a lot.

At the beginning of 2023, the Russian woman reached the final of the junior Australian Open. In a dramatic match, she was defeated by another talented compatriot Alina Korneeva. And burst into tears after the end of the match. It was then that the tennis player decided that it was time to perform among adults more often. Mirra was in the top 400 in April, but then took two ITF60 titles and broke into the top 200. At some point, the Russian woman won 13 meetings in a row!

Breakthrough in MadridProgress happened at the supertournament in Madrid. The first opponent was the finalist of the US Open — 2021 Canadian Leila Fernandez. Since then, Layla has dipped in the results, but is still in the top 50 of the world rankings. Mirra confidently dealt with a much more experienced Canadian in two draws.

So the Russian woman won the first victory in her career. Andreeva is the third youngest tennis player since 2009 to win a match in the WTA 1000 category. Above are the Americans Corey Gauff and Katherine Cartan Bellis. Mirra also became the second 15-year-old tennis player since 2015 to defeat a top 50-ranked opponent at the WTA 1000 tournament.
In the second round, she was opposed by world No. 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia. And in February, the Brazilian was even the 12th. Andreeva had to tinker with her a little longer. In the first set, Beatriz led 5-3, but Mirra returned to the game and won in a tie-break. In the second set, the Russian woman immediately took someone else's serve, and then simply kept the advantage.
In the next round, Andreeva will meet the winner of the match between the Czech Marketa Vondrousova and the Polish Magda Linett (17th seed). It is terribly interesting to see what will happen to Andreeva not only in the tournament, but also in her career. We have not had such a bright young star, perhaps, since the time of Maria Sharapova.
