US donates cybersecurity equipment to Moldova

CHISINAU, Apr 29 The US authorities have provided Moldova with $600,000 worth of cybersecurity equipment, the press service of the US Embassy in Chisinau reported.
“Prime Minister Dorin Recean and US Ambassador Kent Logsdon delivered welcoming speeches at the second meeting of the Moldova Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity Working Group. Ambassador Logsdon also announced the donation of cybersecurity equipment to the Government of Moldova, including hardware for software and configuration support, in the amount of about 600 thousand dollars,” the Embassy's Facebook page* says.

As the diplomatic mission specified, the equipment will allow the republic to provide an additional level security.

At the end of December, the Supreme Security Council of the Republic held a meeting dedicated to cyber security. Also, the head of the Information and Security Service (ISS), Alexander Musteata, expressed regret that the authorities cannot control the telegram channels through which disinformation is allegedly spread.
A number of Russian media in Moldova have already been banned, the Information and Security Service of Moldova has blocked the Sputnik Moldova website since February 26, 2022, and since March 7, the broadcasting of the agency’s station. The Russian Embassy in Chisinau condemned the decision of the Moldovan authorities to block the operation of the Sputnik Moldova website and called the accusations against the agency biased and politicized. Also, Moldova suspended the license of the opposition and leading Russian-language TV channels Primul in Moldova, RTR Moldova, Accent TV, NTV Moldova, TV6, Orhei TV, which allegedly cover information about events in the country and Ukraine in bad faith, explaining this decision as a risk of disinformation.
Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow considers the decision of Chisinau as an act of political censorship. The Russian Foreign Ministry added that such actions are an outrage on the principle of media pluralism and a gross violation of the right to freedom of access to information, and Moscow also qualifies this as a “cynical infringement of the rights of national minorities.”
