The Sarmatians inhabited the region of the Southern Urals 2500-1600 years ago. They were nomads, and their culture, beliefs and way of life can only be judged by burials. Burial grounds were built different — depending on the status. Thus, the «royal» mounds reached 18 meters in height and 150-200 meters in diameter.
Visitors will see armor and ammunition, swords, daggers, harness, clothes, jewelry and ritual items.
Also on display are vessels made of precious metals. «Almost all of them were found in mound No. 1, and they were made on the territory of the Achaemenid Empire. Several vessels of stone and colored glass, found in Filippovka, were probably made there,» the museum says.

Evidence of the existence of the custom of tattooing among the steppe nomads was also found in this necropolis — three complexes with tools and pigments. Drawing on the skin was associated «with magical practices and rituals in which women played an important role,» the Pushkin Museum clarifies.
Items from the funds of the Orenburg Governor's Museum of History and Local Lore are exhibited outside of it for the first time. «Some of them were not exhibited even in the institution itself, they were known only to a narrow circle of specialists,» the press release says. Among them is a ritual vessel from Filippovka I mound No. 1 (sacrificial complex 2, burial 5).
