MOSCOW, May 2. Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 2nd class, the corresponding decree was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.
Gergiev celebrates his 70th birthday on Tuesday.
«For a great contribution to the development of national culture and art, many years of fruitful activity, to award Valery Abisalovich Gergiev with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree,» the decree says.

Valery Gergiev was born on May 2, 1953 in Moscow, in 1972 he graduated from the College of Arts (now the Vladikavkaz College of Arts named after V. A. Gergiev) in piano, in 1977 he graduated from the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov (class of conducting theorist, Professor Ilya Musin). In 1988, Valery Gergiev was elected musical director of the Mariinsky Theatre. In 1996, he became its artistic director — director (taking over the leadership of the orchestra, opera and ballet troupes).

Gergiev is a People's Artist of Russia (1996), a laureate of the State Prizes of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art (1993, 1998) and in the field of humanitarian activity (2015), a prize of the President of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art (2001). Laureate of the Russian Government Prize in the field of culture (2015). He was awarded the Order of Friendship (2000), the Order of Alexander Nevsky (2016).

Under the baton of Gergiev, the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra reached a new level, having mastered not only new opera and ballet scores, but also an extensive symphony repertoire — all symphonies by Ludwig Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Sergei Prokofiev, Jan Sibelius, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, as well as works by Hector Berlioz, Anton Bruckner, Sergei Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin, Igor Stravinsky, Richard Strauss and others.
