Scientists from Harbin Medical University analyzed the results of the US National Health and Nutrition Study, which was conducted from 2003 to 2014 with the participation of 21.5 thousand Americans. At the beginning of the observation period, all participants were 30 years old, the distribution by sex was almost the same.
The authors of the study focused on assessing the association of deaths in this cohort from cardiovascular and oncological diseases and other causes with their dietary habits that volunteers reported in surveys.
The researchers categorized the participants' morning meal into three groups: a fruit and vegetable breakfast — high in starchy foods — and a so-called Western breakfast, which typically includes scrambled eggs and bacon or ham, cereal, toast, or baked goods. As a control group, data from those volunteers who followed any other diet were used.
Analysis of the data showed that hearty Western breakfast eaters were more likely to consume products made from refined grains, solid fats, and sugar. Volunteers who preferred breakfast in the morning ate more whole grains, yogurt, and nuts throughout the day. At the same time, fans of foods high in starch, as expected, showed a high level of consumption of products from white potatoes.
The highest risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases was among the supporters of the «potato» diet: by 44,-52 %. The probability of early death from all causes in this group was increased by 50-52%. Those who ate a Western breakfast in the morning were 44% more likely to have heart disease. However, those who ate a lot of fruits and vegetables had a 23% lower risk and a 31% lower overall mortality compared to other volunteers.
The authors of the study also found that eating vegetables at dinner was associated with a reduced risk of developing cancer, while at lunch these foods did not have such a positive effect.< /p>
