Thermal anomalies. Scientists have identified new threats to residents of megacities

MOSCOW, May 23. Scientists at the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK) have created an algorithm to determine the hottest urban areas and develop measures to reduce the danger to residents, the press service of the university reported.
As explained in MIIGAiK, the temperature in the urban environment rises higher than in rural areas. Peak values are recorded in specific areas, the so-called urban heat islands. Most often they are found in megacities, where some shopping centers generate more heat than enterprises. strokes, heart attacks and heart attacks, and with the onset of global warming, heat islands will become even more harmful to humans,” said Alexei Kurlov, head of the Research Laboratory for Urban Technologies and Spatial Development.

In order to localize such heat islands throughout Russia, the researchers developed an algorithm for analyzing Earth remote sensing data in the far infrared spectrum. Using this technique, you can not only identify heat islands, but also determine the degree of heating of the area and determine the most unsafe areas for the health of citizens.

“Estimating the intensity of infrared radiation by analyzing images of territories from space, we obtain data on surface temperature. Using the thermal spectral channel of a satellite image, we translate each pixel into exact degrees Celsius. The result is a visualization of thermal spectra, taking into account temperature changes,” added Kurlov .

Excessive indicators were found at factories, railway stations, sports complexes, shopping and business centers. So, in Moscow, the Dubrovka and Dream Island shopping centers, the Moscow City business center, Red and Komsomolskaya squares and the CSKA complex heat up the most.
Based on the results of the study, it is already possible to draw up recommendations to reduce overheating of the area , for example, to create reservoirs, use light-colored asphalt, or green roofs, Kurlov noted. ria.ru/20230510/nauka-1868385839.html» data->
The algorithm will also be useful when planning new infrastructure, Andrey Dozmarov, a junior researcher at the laboratory, believes.

«In the future, we plan to create a predictive model of local climate change, which will be useful when developing plans for the construction of buildings and roads in cities «Our task is to ensure that heat islands do not reduce the quality of life. We understand that the temperature will rise? and its dynamics as a criterion should be taken into account already now when creating infrastructure,» he said.
The scientist emphasized that such an innovative development is the first has taken hold of large cities, and it has been localized for each settlement in Russia.
In the near future, researchers are developing digital solutions for federal and regional departments, as well as popularizing methods for analyzing spatial data in practice.
