The expert estimated how long Russians save up for a car

MOSCOW, June 3Buying a new car from Russians takes an average of 4-5 years: people with a salary of 100-200 thousand rubles save the fastest, and slower — with a salary of about 100 thousand, said the founder of the investment transport company GTK Holding Said Zaliev.
«The level of income directly proportionally affects the choice of a car brand. For example, buyers with an income of 55 thousand rubles prefer Lada Granta, Lada Niva. And on average, they need about 4.5 years to save up for a vehicle,» — the expert said, based on a study of requests from 1,760 customers of the company for the purchase of new vehicles in May 2023.

Residents of the Russian Federation with an income of about 100 thousand rubles choose more expensive models and rich equipment: for example, Lada Vesta or Moskvich 3 in the basic configuration. They need to save up for 5 years for such cars. Buyers with an income of 100-200 thousand rubles opt for Chinese SUVs and crossovers worth from 1.8 to 2.5 million rubles. «They can save up for a car from the salon in an average of 4 years,» Zaliev said.

At the same time, Russians often do not have enough to buy a new car. This year, compared to last year, this figure has grown by a quarter to 1.5 million rubles. «Recall that the average cost of a new car is currently 2.4-2.5 million rubles. Thus, the Russians lack about 63% of the cost of the vehicle. A year earlier — 58%,» the expert noted.
The majority (70%) of those who do not have enough money take out a loan, 15% borrow money from relatives or friends, one in ten draws up an installment plan, and only 5% aim to save up to buy a new car, Zaliev concluded.
