MOSCOW, June 7Russian-made electronic stability control (ESP) systems responsible for stabilizing a car will be more expensive than foreign analogues, because ESP is not installed on every car, said auto expert Igor Morzharetto.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation is considering the possibility of organizing the production of ESP systems in the country, Deputy Minister Vasily Shpak said on Tuesday. He also said that the production of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) is already being launched in Kostroma, and serial deliveries to Russian automakers will begin on July 1.
«It's impossible to localize everything 100%, especially with our very small volumes — less than 1 million cars a year — it will be more expensive than if they buy for I don’t know how much localization of ESP is required, since this is a one-piece thing and is not installed on every car, only quite expensive configurations,” Morzharetto shared his opinion.
At the same time, he noted the reverse situation with anti-lock systems. «But ABS, of course, is needed, because, according to the requirements of the regulations and government decree, by September the system must be installed on all machines,» Morzharetto added.
“In principle, we should have retained the so-called second-tier suppliers. ABS and ESP were made by Bosch factories, but several Russian companies supplied components for them. I believe that on the basis of these Russian companies they are now trying to launch a full-fledged production the anti-lock braking system itself. If they do it, we will be very happy, it is very necessary,» the expert summed up.
Highly localized automakers in the Russian Federation, in particular, the auto giant AvtoVAZ, faced a shortage of ABS and ESP systems last year. Subsequently, the authorities decided to introduce a simplified technical regulation, which provided for the absence of these systems in the manufactured car in order to prevent the suspension of conveyors. Simplified rules for the production of cars in the Russian Federation are valid until February 2024, but with a phased return of requirements.
