A new way to combat shrinkflation has been proposed

A bill has been submitted to the State Duma obliging stores to indicate the price of goods exclusively for 1 kilogram and 1 liter. It would seem, what are we talking about? A private trade question… But interested parliamentarians from their legislative skies descended to sinful earth not in vain. There is a problem for buyers, and a serious one.

A new way to combat shrinkflation

— Recently I saw cherries in the supermarket for 300 rubles, I thought it was per kilogram, — says one customer. — Quite cheap. I collected berries in a bag and went to the cashier. And they counted me — 600 rubles. The price, it turns out, was for 500 grams …

Such confusion with the price and weight in today's trade of carts and a small cart.

— A good piece of cheese on the shelf costs only 40 rubles. Cheap! I take it, and already at the checkout it turns out that this cost is not a piece of this, but 100 grams, — says another buyer. — In stores, sometimes even vegetables are indicated in 100 grams, young Azerbaijani potatoes — 8 rubles. Actually — 80…

In order not to upset buyers by rising prices for products, manufacturers or sellers try not to raise them. But on the other hand, they quietly reduce the weight (mass) of the goods sold at the same price.

Such a marketing technique is not a domestic invention at all. There is even a foreign term for such underweight — shrinkflation, which means reduction and reduction. The product becomes more expensive, but it is not its price that changes, but the weight or volume of the package. What the buyer often does not notice.

Dmitry Yanin, Chairman of the Board of the International Confederation of Consumer Societies, referring to a scientific study, says that it is more comfortable for the buyer to pay the same money for a smaller volume than for the previous one, but more expensive. Such is human psychology. Which, we add from ourselves, is actively used by manufacturers and trade. They have long forgotten about the universally recognized standard of measure called the kilogram. According to State Duma deputy Boris Chernyshev, this is especially a sin at household chemical enterprises, they pump less and less active substance into their cans.

But food manufacturers have been using chemicals for a long time. Milk and juices are sold in bottles of 0.8-0.9 liters, cereals in bags of 0.8 kilograms, pasta — 0.4 kg … And a standard pack of butter, which used to weigh strictly 250 grams, has over the past 15 years «lost weight» up to 180 grams. After a significant rise in the price of eggs a couple of years ago, not the traditional dozen, but 8 or 9 pieces are often put in standard packages …

Everything would be fine, only the prices for the period of underfilling or underweight of the product (sugar, sour cream, buckwheat and much more) remain practically the same as in the original packaging we are used to. As the leader of the world proletariat would say, formally correct, but in essence a mockery. When paying for a product, many of us assume that it is, like in the good old days, kilogram or liter, but in fact, the package has lost 100 or 200 grams.

The initiator of the bill believes that this is fraud. And lawyers say that there is no deception. After all, no one convinced the buyer that he was paying per kilogram, but in fact they sold 800 grams. If you overlooked it, it seems to be your own fault…

In order to put an end to shrinkflation, Dmitry Yanin proposes that it is mandatory to disclose on the price tag information not only about the price of one package, but also about the unit of measurement of goods: 1 kilogram and 1 liter.

This is also agreed in retail chains.

— This is such a marketing ploy, — Shamil Magomedov, Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Association of Retail Market Experts, comments on the situation. — Put in the package not a kilogram, but 900 grams of the product, then 800, without changing the price and thus attracting the buyer. After all, many believe that there is a traditional kilogram of some product. But this marketing has taken on such a scale that it has turned into a big deception of buyers. And who are we fooling? Most often, old people, veterans, who out of habit think that they are buying a kilogram, but in fact — less. It turns out that a huge enterprise profits from the unprotected segments of the population. Therefore, I believe that the initiative of the State Duma is correct.

— Yes, two prices will be set on the retail shelves. On the packaging and indicate the cost of one kilogram. By the way, this is how they do it in Europe.

— Compared to today, the weight and volume of the package will not change, just sellers will indicate two prices on the counter.

— Why wait? The law is correct, we will gradually start.
